I mentioned before that I still have all four of my grandparents. Sadly, that’s going to change very soon. My grandma recently went to the hospital for internal bleeding, and they found a tumor in her heart. The only possible treatment is a surgery that she more than likely would not survive, so she has made the decision to just live her best life while she still can. Sooner or later, the tumor will inevitably detach and clog one of the arteries that delivers blood to her lungs. It could be years or it could be seconds.

So, yeah. I knew this was coming, but I’m not prepared for it. The worst part of it all is how hard my grandpa is taking it, and of course I don’t blame him. Is it bad that I feel almost like I want to just get it over with? I don’t like seeing my family so sad.

I am sad to hear that. It is painful to lose somebody.

That having been said, we as a culture need to stop freaking out and being in denial of death. Just like everybody poops, everybody dies. I think we might have a healthier viewpoint if we talk about it.

Damn, sorry to hear that.

We can dread the inevitable or enjoy the precious time that remains.

It’s probably normal that you want this to be over with... it’s probably that feeling of darkness looming overhead.

Still, there is time to be enjoyed so I hope your grandparents can at least have that.

Your feelings are perfectly normal. My parents and grandparents are gone now, so I have some experience with this. You’ll have to deal with this over the coming years as each of them pass, but after the pain, only the good memories remain and you will feel better.

At least you know about it, and have a chance to say goodbye. Not everyone gets that. But then again, as a christian I dont see a reason to be sad about death, so depending on your beliefs ymmv

lost my last grandparent a bit under two years ago. unlike the other three she was the only one to really die of “old age.” the others were all premature (suicide, black lung, and smoking related) but even though it was clear over the last 8 months that her end was near, it didn’t make it any easier.

(I know it’s done to ease the minds of family, but I kind of don’t like when hospice care says they’re keeping someone “comfortable.”  That almost always means “doped up on morphine.”)

I believe that whatever happens after death is universal, so either we'll meet again or we won't exist anymore to care about anything. So it's not *quite* as comforting as the certainty some people have, but at least I can take comfort in knowing that it won't matter anymore once I'm gone, too.
